Welcoming the New Year wouldn't be complete without Thanh Nien’s great celebration of local talent and fashion.
Thanh Nien's 19th annual charity gala Charming Vietnam is set to hit Ho Chi Minh City for four nights from January 3-6, 2008 with a great line-up of local and overseas live music and fashion.
With its long history of successful shows both at home and abroad since 1994, organizers are under pressure to bring audiences the great nights entertainment they have come to expect.
The last 18 Thanh Nien fundraisers have been great celebrations and received rave reviews.
The theme of this year's Charming Vietnam is “Pho”, meaning “road”.
For the first time ever, the show will be directed by two directors – Huynh Phuc Dien (design) and Dinh Anh Dung (performance).
The show, which promises many surprises, will be divided into five parts - Pho xua (past road), Pho chien tranh (war road), Pho tam linh (spirit road), Pho nay (present road) and Pho hoi nhap (integration road) - to reflect the beauty of the Vietnamese countryside, the misery and devastation of war and the modern, international Vietnam.
Composer Le Quang is writing the music for the show.
He promises to please with some of the most charming music from past to present, from high energy to romance.
As usual, a star-studded line-up of local and overseas songsters is set to hit the stage of Charming Vietnam.
The gala will feature the largest number of bands and singers ever, with a large variety of styles.
Local singers include Thanh Lam, My Linh, Dam Vinh Hung, Phuong Thanh, My Tam, Quang Dung, Le Minh Son, Hong Ngoc, Ho Ngoc Ha, 5 Dong Ke, Mat Troi Moi (New Sun), Anh Khoa and Doan Trang with Lam Thuy Van and Nguyen Hung joining from overseas.
Some of the country's most beautiful women will also appear.
Miss Vietnam 2006 Mai Phuong Thuy and fashion models Chau Anh Minh, Thu Hang, Khanh Ngoc, Xuan Lan, Truong Tri Truc Diem, Phuong Zenana, Phung Ngoc Yen, Vu Thu Phuong and Duong Thi My Linh will grace the catwalk.
The runner-up of the Miss Vietnam Universe contest in the US, Thu Van, will also fly home for the show.
The unique ao dai fashion show has always been an important feature of Charming Vietnam.
Women's ao dai will be supplied by fashion designers Lien Huong and Thuan Viet.
Other fashion collections in the parade are by Ngo Thai Uyen, Cong Tri and Angel Phan-Thai Tuan.
The last Charming Vietnam toured Singapore in August, captivating 2,000 international audience members.
Singapore's leading newspapers, Today and The Straits Times, reported the gala had show-cased Vietnam's cultural heritage and created a greater link between the two countries.
Charming Vietnam was first held in 1994 to raise funds for the Nguyen Thai Binh Scholarship Fund for economically disadvantaged students.
It has so far provided more than 5,000 scholarships worth over VND7 billion (US$436,000).
The 19th Charming Gala will be held at Hoa Binh Theater in HCMC.
